Cakewalk wird eingestellt: das Ende für Sonar, Rapture Pro etc.

Eine traurige Nachricht: die Entwicklungen bei Cakewalk werden laut Gibson eingestellt - und somit auch die Windows-DAW Sonar, die seit den Neunzigern dabei ist.

Das Unternehmen Cakewalk kennt man von der Profi-DAW Sonar für Windows und den Klangerzeugern Rapture Pro sowie Z3TA+ 2. Cakewalk wurde 2008 bereits von Roland übernommen und anschließend 2013 dann von Gibson. Obwohl es immer fleißig Updates gab und Sonar auch mit Platzhirschen wie Logic und Cubase locker mithalten kann, kommt die Ansage von Gibson doch recht unerwartet. Zudem hatte Cakewalk erst vor kurzem die App Momentum rausgebracht und auch das Abo-Bezahlmodell eingeführt. Die Begründung von Gibson fällt recht spartanisch aus:

Gibson Brands announced today that it is ceasing active development and production of Cakewalk branded products. The decision was made to better align with the company’s acquisition strategy that is heavily focused on growth in the global consumer electronics audio business under the Philips brand.“

Für aktuelle Sonar-Anwender heißt das, es wird keine großen Neuerungen mehr geben und früher oder später wird Sonar im DAW-Wettbewerb sehr weit hinten liegen. Doch aktuell heißt es bei Cakewalk, dass man die DAW inkl. Online-Service wie gewohnt nutzen kann, aber kleinere Updates werden runtergefahren. Man kann nur hoffen, das Cakewalk von einem ambitionierten Konzern übernommen wird. 

So what does this mean for you, our loyal customers who've been with us all these years? Cakewalk's servers will continue to operate, you will still have access to all of your online assets, and your software will continue to work normally. A dedicated team has been established during this transition period to continue to serve the Cakewalk community. Monthly updates to SONAR from Cakewalk will however cease during this time.
